 Sew Chapstick Cozy Keychains

Tutorial for Sewing your Own Chapstick Keychain

Materials Needed

  • 3.5″ Wide by 4″ Tall piece of material for main base
  • 3.5″ Wide by 3.5″ Tall piece of material for pocket
  • 2″ Wide by 2.5″ Tall piece of material
  • Key Ring
  • Sewing Machine and Thread
  • Pins
  • Favorite Lip Gloss or Chap Stick

Step One.  Cutting the Material

The first step is to cut all your material into the right sizes for the key ring.  You will need a 3.5″ wide by 4″ tall piece of material for the main base of the key ring, a 3.5″ wide by 3.5″ tall piece of material for pocket of the key ring, and a 2″ wide by 2.5″ tall piece of material for the key ring loop.

Step Two.  Preparing the Edges

a.  After you cut your material the next thing is fold 0.5″ of the top edge of the two main parts of the key ring and pin them back front to back.  This is a hem and ensures a smooth edge on your key ring.

You want to make sure for the 3.5″ wide by 4″ tall piece you pin the side that is 4″ tall and for the 3.5″ wide by 3.5″ tall piece you pin back the side that is 3.5″ tall.

b.  Once you pin back the two pieces for the main base of the key ring, sew a straight stitch all the way across the two pieces of material.

Step Three.  Creating the Main Part of the Key Ring

Now that you have prepared the hem for the two pieces of material, you are ready to create the main part of the key ring.

a.  Place the two pieces of material on top of each other with the right sides of the fabric facing you and make sure both of pieces have the newly hemmed edges to the top.

b.  While still on top of each other, carefully fold both pieces length wise with the right sides of the material facing inward.

c.  Pin the two pieces of material folded together in place.

d.  Using a 5/8″ seam allowance sew the two un-hemmed edges of the key ring base with a straight stitch.

e.  Once you have sewn the two pieces and removed the pins, you are ready to turn the main base of the key ring right side out.

The first part that will turn right side out will be the main base and the pocket will still be inside out.

Once you have the main base the right way, push the base from the bottom through the pocket piece and the pocket will be all the way around the base.

Step Four.  Making the Key Ring Loop

a.  Take the 2″ wide by 2.5″ tall piece of material and fold one side in and the other side over it.

b.  Pin the folds so they stay in place to sew them.

c.  Using a zig zag stitch sew along the seam of the fold.

d.  Fold the key ring loop in half and tuck it into the main base of the key run lip gloss holder.  Have it stick out about 0.25″ and pin the key loop in place.

e.  Using a straight stitch, sew the top of the main base of the key ring closed so that the key ring loop you have pinned stays in place.  You can go across the top of the base a few times if you want to make sure it stays on.

f.  Now attached your key ring around the loop and add your lip gloss or chap stick and you are finished!

Aren’t they adorable?  Don’t forget you can also buy them in the Rilos & MiMi Etsy Store!

What kind of material do you suggest? It looks like flannel in the tutorial pictures, but I was wondering if cotton would also work…maybe it would need to be doubled to be thick enough?

    • Hey! I like using duck cotton the best actually because it’s almost canvas like. The ones pictured are mostly flannel which works great too. Some of mine I made are cotton which is pretty thin, you don’t need to double it but you would want to make the keychains a little smaller so the lip gloss does not fall out.
Thanks for checking out the tutorial and let me know how they turn out! 🙂
