I would have never guessed in a million years that I would be eating or writing about deer steak but using this recipe for deer steak makes it truly amazing. This recipe came from the other side of my family (in-laws) and is the only way we cook deer steak at our house. The kids love it! When we ate it last night I joked that daddy won’t be able to shoot enough deer to keep up with all the steak the kids want to eat.
You don’t have to use deer steak for this recipe if you don’t want any beef will do!
Here is the recipe for this amazing grilled deer steak:
- Deer Steak Fillets (approximately 2 lbs)
- Package of Bacon
- 1 cup Soy Sauce (I like China Lilly the best but I think you can only get it in Canada)
- 1 cup Canola or Vegetable Oil
- 1 cup Lemon Juice
- 1 Bay Leaf
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Salt
- 1/2 tsp Onion Salt
Step One: Prepare the Steak
When we have the deer meat we keep it in loin strips, I then cut the meat into about 3/4 inch strips.
Once cut I wrap a whole piece of bacon around each piece of steak and stick toothpicks through them to keep the bacon on. Some people say to soak toothpicks in water before grilling with them to keep them from burning but I have not had any problems.
Place the deer steak in a container for marinating. I love my Tupperware container for marinating!
Step Two: Prepare the Marinate
In a large bowl combine the oil, soy sauce and lemon juice. If you are increasing the recipe make sure you use equal parts of the three ingredients. Stir them up and then add the garlic salt, onion salt and bay leaf and stir again.
Pour the marinate right over the deer steak and close the container up.
Step Three: Refrigerate
You will want to refrigerate at least over night but I usually try and wait at least two days, this recipe is way better if you wait!
Step Four: Grill
We always grill this kind of deer steak, I am sure there are other ways to cook too.
Pre-heat your grill to about 400 degrees.
We grill the steaks on the top rack to make sure nothing starts on fire. The bacon has a lot of grease. Leave them on for 15-20 minutes depending on how you like them cooked.
